World of Work

At King’s we are committed to ensuring that all our students in years 7 to 11 have high quality impartial advice on career opportunities, and that they progress onto sixth form or high quality apprenticeships after year 11 with clear career goals in mind. It is very important to us to know that all year 11 students have a plan for their next step in their flight path to becoming successful citizens.

We are fully committed to supporting our students in making well-informed decisions by providing access to personalised, impartial and independent information and guidance about the range of options (including academic, vocational, apprenticeships) that are most likely to help them to achieve their ambitions. We believe that giving students the best careers education and guidance is vital to improving their motivation so that, by the time they enter year 11, they are ready to compete on a national basis and succeed!

All students will be entitled to a World of Work Programme that:

• Supports the academy’s mission of enhancing the future social mobility of all students, irrespective of educational starting points, ethnicity, family background, disability or postcode by providing good quality independent careers advice and personal guidance which inspires them, meets their need and motivates them to fulfil their potential.
• Is based on the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks for good Careers Information Advice and Educational Guidance (CIAEG).
• Inspires them to develop high aspirations and consider a broad and ambitious range of future career opportunities regardless of gender, ability or social background.
• Enables employers, training providers, local colleges and others agencies to work in partnership with the academy in providing high quality impartial advice and contact with the world of work.
• Provides opportunities for meaningful encounters with employees, employers, further and higher education and experience of workplaces.
• Ensures that they are aware of the full range of academic, technical and vocational routes available at each transition point in their personal flight path so that they have the necessary knowledge to make successful future transitions.
• Develops their knowledge of career possibilities including necessary character traits, leadership skills and knowledge of up-to-date labour market information.
• Helps them develop the necessary enterprise and employability skills, including skills for self-employment through Super Learning Days, Project Days and the enriching curriculum.
• Supports inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promotes equality of opportunity.
• Encourages our students to see career development as a life-long process.
• Is weaved and embedded into subjects across the curriculum. 

World of Work Programme: Years 7 and 8

• Year 7 induction week and the greeter system helps students to align their flight paths and revisit them during the year.
• All students will complete Operation Reset with a career focus.
• All students will deliver a Beautiful Work presentation with a focus on World of Work journeys.
• Our ASPIRE Programme helps students to understand more about themselves (self-development), know where to look for useful information (careers exploration) and plan for the future (career management).
• All students take part in the Careers Week activities
• Students meet visitors from the World of Work during Super Learning Days or Project Week (Enterprise and STEM days).
• Tutor mentoring with a career focus every learning cycle.
• All students visit at least one university to enhance aspirations.

World of Work Programme: Years 9 and 10

• Our ASPIRE programme helps students to understand more about themselves, find out about careers and the world of work, and help them to plan for their future.
• All students have access to impartial careers advice and guidance and 1:1 careers coaching to support them for their GCSE preferences.
• All students take part in the Careers Week activities.
• Students meet visitors from the World of Work during Super Learning Days or Project Week.
• All students visit at least one university to enhance aspirations.
• Our ASPIRE and World of Work Programme helps help students with writing a CV, preparing for interviews and completing application forms.
• Year 9 students will take part in a mock interview event and work with employers from World of Work industries.
• Year 10 students take part in World of Work Business Speed Dating to learn more about different industries.
• Tutor mentoring with a career focus every learning cycle.

World of Work Programme: Years 11, 12 and 13

• Our ASPIRE Programme helps students to identify a range of post-16 pathways to make informed choices about their future; complete application forms, writing a CV and personal statement and prepare for interviews.
• Students participate in career focused form time sessions where they complete career research, UCAS and application forms.
• All students attend the employability skills, interview skills workshops and mock interviews throughout the year.
• All students attend careers assemblies with various guest speakers every learning.
• All students take part in the Careers Week activities.
• All students visit at least one university to enhance aspirations.
• All students are entitled to 1:1 career appointments to help support their flight path
